Controls Design Engineer

Join a dynamic team in the heart of Raleigh, NC, as a pivotal member of our Controls Engineering group. We are seeking a talented Controls Design Engineer who has a proven track record in designing advanced process control systems. This opportunity requires collaborative work with other engineers and project managers to design control systems that meet project specifications and sales objectives.

In this role, your primary responsibilities will include:

  • Designing and developing automation control systems for various applications including boilers, industrial furnaces, kilns, and other combustion-related systems.
  • Reviewing project documents and specifications to establish clear design criteria, encompassing system power needs and hardware requirements including PLC I/O lists.
  • Utilizing AutoCAD to produce comprehensive drawings and diagrams, such as electrical ladder diagrams, PLC wiring diagrams, and control panel layouts that facilitate fabrication and assembly processes.
  • Selecting and recommending suitable instrumentation for process control systems, including but not limited to pressure transmitters, temperature transmitters, flowmeters, and control valves.
  • Engaging in process system reviews and conducting occasional site assessments to provide project support.
  • Collaborating with the sales team by providing technical insights for project estimating and quoting.
  • Offering technical assistance to various departments, including UL508A panel assembly and valve assembly teams.
  • Participating in Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT) of control panels prior to their shipment.
  • Performing additional duties as required that contribute to team objectives.

Ideal candidates will have:

  • At least five years of relevant experience in controls design.
  • A Bachelor’s degree in mechanical or electrical engineering is preferred; a two-year technical or associate’s degree alongside significant experience is also considered.
  • In-depth knowledge and experience with process control systems; familiarity with combustion systems is an added advantage.
  • Proficiency in creating detailed electrical ladder diagrams, PLC wiring diagrams, and control panel layout diagrams.
  • Experience generating mechanical fabrication drawings.
  • Expertise in using AutoCAD software for design purposes.
  • Competency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook) along with adaptability to learn internal software systems.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to effectively collaborate with engineers, sales teams, and clients.
  • A proactive approach to multitasking and the ability to work independently within a fast-paced, evolving environment.
