Controls Design Engineer

Join a dynamic engineering team in Charlotte, NC, as we seek a talented Controls Design Engineer. In this role, you will leverage your expertise in designing process control systems to make a significant impact in the process and power industries. This position is part of our dedicated Controls Engineering team and offers a collaborative environment where you will coordinate closely with fellow Controls Engineers and Project Managers. Your main focus will be to create innovative process control system designs that align with our project and sales objectives. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to assist in generating detailed mechanical fabrication drawings supporting our valve assembly department.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and design process control systems tailored for boilers, industrial furnaces, kilns, and other combustion-related applications.
  • Review project specifications to establish design criteria, which includes:
  • Identifying system power requirements and developing PLC input/output lists
  • Selecting and specifying necessary hardware like PLCs, power supplies, and control panel components
  • Translate design specifications into precise AutoCAD drawings, including:
  • Electrical ladder diagrams and PLC wiring diagrams
  • Layouts for enclosures and subpanels to facilitate fabrication and assembly
  • Select instrumentation for process controls, such as:
  • Pressure transmitters and temperature transmitters
  • Flowmeters and control valves
  • Conduct process system reviews, travel for site assessments, and support project implementation.
  • Assist the sales team with project cost estimations and quotations.
  • Provide technical support to panel and valve assembly shops.
  • Participate in Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) of completed control panels before shipment.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as assigned.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • At least five years of relevant experience in controls engineering or a related field.
  • A Bachelor’s degree in mechanical or electrical engineering is preferred; candidates with a two-year technical degree or associate’s degree and relevant experience will be considered.
  • Proven experience with process control systems; experience with combustion systems is a plus.
  • Demonstrated ability to produce electrical ladder diagrams, PLC wiring diagrams, and control panel layouts.
  • Proficient in creating detailed mechanical fabrication drawings.
  • Solid knowledge of AutoCAD software for design purposes.
  • Strong skills in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook) with the ability to adapt to company-specific software.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to effectively engage with engineering teams, sales staff, and customers.
  • Capability to manage multiple tasks independently in a fast-paced environment.
